One of N
a sculpture by Chaim Goodman Strauss and Eugene Sargent

This sculpture was designed by Chaim Goodman Strauss, constructed by Eugene Sargent and assembled by the participants of the recent Gathering for Gardner 9. It resides in the sculpture garden of Tom and Sarah Rodgers in Atlanta.

Computer models aided in the visualization and construction of the sculpture

The sculpture is composed of 512 - 2 inch elbows welded into 32 sections with seperable joints. The elbows form one long loop which fills every node within the cube. The path is random with constraints. Chaim developed the design with the aid of Mathematica. He passed this string of numbers to Eugene:

The digits represent the four possible ways of welding the elbows. Eugene made his own model using C++ and openGL to construct the piece (see the above images).
