A small bronze sculpture.
This piece was comissioned as a memorial for a guy who liked flying, among other things. The idea is ascention, climbing through the turbulence of life to be floating aloft, looking back on the distance you came.

It's about 11 inches tall, weighs about 15 pounds.

The saying "come back again" was a favorite of his.

The metal is silicon bronze, sandcast in 5 major pieces and 4 wingtips and then welded together.

How it was made

It started as a clay sculpting.
The clay is studied and parting lines are defined by sticking in pieces of sheet metal. Wings were cut off

Flinging Plaster

A plaster waste mold.

The mold pieces are cleaned up and painted with clay slip, which acts as a release. Then Bondo patterns are made in the plaster.

A sand mold opened just after ramming.

Fire, Hot metal, etc.
I'm working on a page about sandcasting.

The parts after casting and cleaning up
.

After welding and some finishing (but not an excessive amount), I sandblasted the piece and gave it a liver of sulfur patina.
I would like to do more of this kind of work.
